In 2012, I was a medical student on my final year of university in the united kingdom.
At this time, my father was suffering from chronic kidney disease and many years of diabetes. I visited him in January 2012 and noticed his toe had developed a black mark, and his nail underbed had started to turn into a very dark almost black colour. I noticed a “punch-out” type of ulcer also forming on his little toe.
This rang some alarm bells in my head and we arranged for a consult with the local doctors. I was already anticipating the worst. Having recently finished an attachment in diabetes and endocrinology I knew all to well that this was a dangerous presentation and would result in amputation. The doctors confirmed it, they said the only way is to amputate above the knee. From just a small scab to the toe? Shocking right? Amputation was not an option for us, because his mobility was already very poor due to a lot of muscle wasting, with this amputation it would have meant an even accelerated decline in overall health and life quality.
Off we flew to mumbai to get a second opinion. From the plane straight to the hospital.
We sat there for about 12 hours, in the hope that the vascular surgeon and the orthopaedic surgeon would arrive anytime soon to take a history and advise on a way forward. When they did show up they did a very rushed examination, took a very brief history , looked at us, and said we must amputate, there is no other option. Our hearts sank. What now?
we took leave, requesting for a couple days to get our thoughts in order. There was no escaping this. What miracle could possibly happen in two days?
Now the story gets exciting.
My Uncle who lives in Mumbai , came rushing to see us very excited with something he happened to see on the road. He saw Dr jhuvekar’s ad about helping patients with diabetic foot problems. He insisted we go and check it out. We did. His roadside curiosity and his love for my family, changed our fortunes.
At the time the clinic was operating under the name of stosswelle. At the ashaparekhhospital. We were welcomed by Dr Jhuvekar and his small ever smiling team.
He explained his treatment of ultrasound waves and how it stimulates the growth of new blood supply to me.
Could this be true? All kinds of doubts and hopes mix up in your mind at the time. We had a lot to lose if we amputate, so this was worth an attempt. He could clearly see the worry in our eyes and took out almost two hours of his time to sit with us an explain the whole process in great detail
We even discussed this treatment with other doctors at the time, some from my university, others who are close family friends in india.Everyone was very skeptical. I was too. This treatment was unheard of. I had never come across any such information through my 5 years in med school. The only solution to this problem has traditionally been amputation.
The non invasive nature of the treatment was very tempting, it meant we could try options before the irreversible amputation.
We began treatment. The therapy took several months. I was in my final year of undergraduate medicine and the pressure on my mind was immense. The Team took immediate notice of this and assisted me in communicating with my faculty on the situation. The university made arrangements for me to do the exams at my convenience, with absolute priority being focused on the care of my family and self. I was really amazed with the level of support I got both from stossewelle and from my university.
During the course of treatment,my father developed another bigger and larger ulcer on his foot. Now we were going to amputate for sure? Was the situation still under control?
Dr jhuvekar gave us his full assurance he was in complete control of the situation. Everything I had learned in medical school was telling me this was not going to work. But we did not lose our faith, and we gave our full trust to the clinic to guide us.
They encouraged some physio interventions, they used very uniques therapies such as vacuum pumps to aid in the healing of his ulcer. the surgeons knife was avoided at all costs, and only minimal surgical interventions were done to clean off some dead skin around the wound, to encourage healing.
The combination of therapies did wonders. i will let the photos speak for themselves. 1 month, 4 month, 8 month. It took time. But Dr Jhuvekar got us there! Till date we still visit the clinic regularly for a follow up. Sometimes just to go say hello and say thank you still. Till date,8 years later, no surgical amputations. He is still reasonably mobile with a zimmerframe, and stands on his two feet with some secondary support. I never imagined we would get this far with such great success.
thank you stosswelle team for everything.you changed our lives! What I loved most was that they saw the bigger picture and treated the patient and the family in a very holistic multi-disciplinary approach. Sometimes its easy to forget that the carers are going through a tough time , more so then the patient themselves.Carers need a lot of support to keep their morale high, without which this long journey is impossible.
It is my hope that this therapy is studied more and made more accessible to patients all over the world. For us it has been an absolute game changer. Once again, I don’t think I can ever say enough of this, thank you Dr Jhuvekar and the entire Stossewelle team for everything.
